What happens in the chair
A quick look and a chat
Your technician looks at your natural brow line and asks what you want: a light tidy, a more defined arch, or just the stray hairs gone. For a tint, you agree on a shade together, usually a little darker than your hair so the finer hairs show. Your total is confirmed before anything starts.
Cleanse and prep
The skin is cleansed so there is no oil, makeup or lotion between the wax and the hair. Hairs that should stay are combed into place so only the ones outside the shape are waxed.
Wax in small sections
Warm wax is typically applied in the direction of hair growth and removed against it, in short strips so each pull is quick. Brows are done a few hairs at a time; lip and chin take only a few passes. Any stubborn single hairs are usually tweezed at the end.
Tint, if booked
The tint is brushed through the brow hairs, left to develop for a few minutes, then wiped clean. The color softens slightly over the first day or two.
Soothe and finish
Wax residue is removed and a soothing lotion is usually applied. Your technician shows you the shape before you leave; if you are not happy with it, say so then and it is corrected before you go.
How long it lasts
Because wax takes the hair out at the root, regrowth typically takes three to four weeks rather than the day or two you get from a razor. Most people book brows every three to five weeks, and lip or chin on a similar rhythm. Regular waxing often makes regrowth finer over time, though that varies from person to person.
Brow tint typically lasts three to six weeks on the hair and fades gradually as the hairs shed and new ones grow in. Any color that lands on the skin fades within a few days. There is nothing to remove; it simply grows out.
Looking after it
- Expect a little pinkness for a few hours afterwards; it settles on its own.
- Keep the area free of makeup and heavy creams, and avoid touching it, for the rest of the day so the open follicles stay clean.
- Skip hot showers, saunas, sunbathing and sweaty workouts for about 24 hours; heat and sweat irritate freshly waxed skin.
- Use sunscreen on the face for the next few days, since freshly waxed skin burns more easily.
- After a tint, avoid oil-based cleansers and makeup removers on the brows for the first day and do not scrub them; both lift the color faster.
- Leave the stray hairs alone between visits. Plucking in between makes it harder to keep a clean shape next time.

How long does the hair need to be?
About a quarter of an inch — roughly two weeks of growth after shaving. Shorter than that and the wax cannot grip it cleanly.
Does brow waxing hurt?
There is a short sting with each strip, more like a snap than pain, and the brow area is quick because it is small. Most people find it easier than they expected, and many find it gets easier with regular visits. Some people are more sensitive in the days before their period or after a lot of caffeine, so it can help to plan around that.
Can I wax if I use retinol or acne treatment?
Retinoids, exfoliating acids and some prescription acne treatments thin the top layer of skin, so wax can lift skin along with hair. Tell your technician what you use on your face and when you last applied it, so they can judge whether the skin is ready to be waxed. Never stop a prescription for a wax; tweezing is an option if the skin is not ready.
Will the tint match my hair color?
Brow tint comes in a small range of shades and your technician chooses one with you. A tint is usually taken a little darker than your hair so the fine, pale hairs show, and it softens over the first day or two. It colors only the hair you already have; it does not add hair.
