Builder gel is a thick gel sculpted over the natural nail and cured into shape. It reinforces the stress point where nails usually bend and break, and it can add a little length as a full set or simply add strength — the right choice when your nails split or peel once they grow past the fingertip. Gel X takes a different approach: soft-gel full-cover tips, pre-shaped to a length and style, are bonded to the nail with gel and cured. There is no filing down of the natural nail, the set is lighter than acrylic, and it wears three to four weeks. What happens in the chair
Consultation
You and your technician decide which of the three systems fits: builder gel for strength over your own nail, Gel X or Tap Gel for tip-based length. Length and shape are agreed against your own nail bed, and your full total is confirmed before work begins.
Prep
Any existing product is soaked off. The natural nail is shaped, the cuticle area tidied and the surface lightly buffed and cleansed so the gel bonds. With Gel X the natural nail is not filed down — just prepared. Files and buffers are single-use; metal implements are cleaned, disinfected and sealed between guests.
Tip sizing (Gel X and Tap Gel)
A pre-shaped soft-gel tip is matched to each nail so it sits flush from sidewall to sidewall with no gap; a tip that is too wide or too narrow is a common cause of early lifting. The tips come in a set length and shape and are trimmed and refined to what you chose.
Bond and cure
A thin base or bonding layer goes on the natural nail and is cured. For Gel X and Tap Gel, gel is applied inside the tip, the tip is pressed on and the whole nail is cured under the lamp — gel only hardens under light, so it stays workable until then. For builder gel, the gel is sculpted over the nail in layers, thickest at the stress point, curing between layers.
Shape and refine
Once cured, the set is filed to its final outline and thickness and buffed smooth. Builder gel needs more shaping here because it was sculpted by hand; a Gel X tip arrives nearly finished and needs only refining.
Color and finish
Gel color, a French or art is applied and cured, then a top coat is cured for the final shine. Everything is touch-dry when you stand up. A little cuticle oil usually finishes the set.
How long it lasts
Gel X wears three to four weeks, and builder gel and Tap Gel are typically in the same range. Most sets need a fill every two to three weeks as the nail grows out: the regrowth area is filed back and fresh gel is blended in, so the set carries on. Fills are from $50 for all three systems. With Gel X, some people prefer a fresh set over a fill once the tips have grown well past the cuticle, because the tip sits at a fixed length and a fill cannot move it.
Removal is a soak: the gel is usually filed back to thin it, then soaked off rather than pried, which is what keeps the nail plate intact. A Gel X take-off is from $15, a Tap Gel take-off from $20, and a standard soak-off is $5 with another service or from $10 on its own. If something chips, lifts or breaks within 7 days, come back and it is repaired at no charge.
Looking after it
- Keep the set out of long hot soaks for the first day; heat and moisture can soften a fresh bond.
- Cuticle oil daily — it keeps the skin and the edge of the gel from drying out, which is where lifting starts.
- Do not use the nails as tools; a pried-up edge will lift.
- Wear gloves for washing up, cleaning and anything with detergent.
- If a nail lifts or chips, do not peel it; peeling takes layers of your natural nail with it. Book a repair — within 7 days it is free.
- Book a fill every two to three weeks rather than waiting until the set is grown out and top-heavy.

Does Gel X use a UV lamp?
