Are UV Nail Lamps Safe? What the Evidence Says

What dermatologists and the 2023 Nature Communications study say about gel nail lamps, why LED lamps still emit UVA, and three things you control.

Every so often a story about nail lamps goes around and for a week or two people ask us about it in the chair. It is a fair question. We use these lamps all day, on our guests and on ourselves, so we have read what the dermatology sources actually say. This is our attempt to pass that along without hype in either direction.

One thing first: we are licensed nail technicians, not dermatologists. What follows is what the people who study skin have concluded, with links, and what we can do on our side of the table. Anything about your own skin belongs with a doctor.

What the lamp is doing

Gel only hardens under light. Every gel service on our menu, from a $38 gel manicure to Gel X and builder gel, involves a short cure under the lamp after each coat. The light that does the curing is ultraviolet, mostly the UVA band.

The Skin Cancer Foundation is blunt about the common misunderstanding: some nail lamps are called UV lamps and some are called LED lamps, but both emit UV radiation, predominantly UVA. Harvard Health says the same. The LED label describes the bulb, not a different kind of light. So if a salon tells you their lamp is UV-free, that is not quite right.

The evidence, in order

2014, the exposure estimate. As MD Anderson summarizes it, a 2014 study tested 17 lamps across 16 salons, found the UVA output varied widely from lamp to lamp, and concluded that a single visit posed little concern, while repeated visits could add up. Harvard Health's reading is that the UVA from a gel manicure every two weeks probably is not high enough to raise skin cancer risk significantly.

2023, the cell study. The paper most of the recent headlines came from is in Nature Communications. Researchers put human and mouse cells under a nail dryer. A single 20-minute session killed 20–30% of the cells; three consecutive 20-minute exposures killed 65–70%. The surviving cells showed DNA damage and a pattern of mutations matching those previously attributed to reactive oxygen species. Those are real findings.

It is also worth reading what the authors wrote next. In their own words, the study shows the radiation is cytotoxic, genotoxic and mutagenic, but it does not provide direct evidence for an increased cancer risk in human beings. They do say their results and earlier case reports strongly suggest these lamps may cause cancers of the hand, and they call for large-scale epidemiological studies to quantify the risk. Cells in a dish have no skin over them and no polish on them; hands under a lamp do. That gap is what the missing studies would fill.

What the clinics conclude. MD Anderson's dermatologist, Dr. Saira George, says the risk of skin cancer from nail dryers appears to be low, and still worth reducing where you can. The Skin Cancer Foundation's Dr. Elizabeth Hale says even the most intense of these devices presents only a moderate UV risk, far lower than a tanning device. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that repeated gel manicures can increase the risk of skin cancer and premature skin aging, and gives the precautions below.

Three things you control

None of these need our permission, and each is recommended by at least one of the sources above.

  1. Sunscreen on your hands before you come in. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends a broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen applied 20 minutes before your hands go under the light. The AAD specifies SPF 30 or higher and water-resistant. Put it on at home; the nail surface is cleansed before color anyway, so the sunscreen belongs on the skin, not the nail.
  2. Pick a service that does not use a lamp. That is the one we can help with most directly, and it is the next section.

One caveat from the Skin Cancer Foundation that we want to repeat accurately: sunscreen protects the skin on your hands, but it does not protect against squamous cell carcinoma under the nail itself, which it describes as rare. Nothing on this list makes the exposure zero except skipping the lamp.

The no-lamp options on our menu

If you want gel and the precautions above, that is a reasonable choice too. None of the sources tells anyone to stop getting gel; the AAD suggests saving it for special occasions, and all of them suggest sunscreen or gloves. We would rather you make the call with the facts than have us make it for you.

Where our job ends

We cannot assess a mole, a new dark streak under a nail, or a sore on your hand that is not healing. Those are reasons to see a board-certified dermatologist, and the AAD says the same about any unusual change to your nails or a nail problem that keeps coming back. If you have had skin cancer, take a medication that makes you sun-sensitive, or are simply worried, ask your doctor before your next gel appointment rather than asking us; we will do a no-lamp service in the meantime.

When you come in, tell us which you would like: a gel service with sunscreen already on and gloves if you brought them, or a no-lamp service such as a classic manicure, a regular polish change or dip. Either way, ask us to show you the lamp and how long each cure is before we start. We would rather you ask.

Questions we get

Do LED nail lamps emit UV?

Yes. The Skin Cancer Foundation and Harvard Health both say that UV and LED nail lamps emit ultraviolet radiation, predominantly UVA. LED describes the bulb, not a safer kind of light.

Has a nail lamp been shown to cause skin cancer in people?

No population study has established that. The 2023 Nature Communications study found DNA damage and mutations in cells under a nail dryer, and its authors wrote that it does not provide direct evidence of increased cancer risk in humans while calling for studies in people. Dermatology sources describe the risk as low.

When should I put sunscreen on for a gel manicure?

The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends a broad-spectrum sunscreen on your hands 20 minutes before your hands go under the light; the AAD specifies SPF 30 or higher and water-resistant. Apply it at home so it has time to set.

Which Sora services do not use a lamp?
